This Federal style house in Tower Grove East on Arsenal near the intersection with Gravois Road is one of the oldest houses in the neighborhood. Based on the styles of construction, it appears that the Federal style portion of the building was built in the late 1850s, and the federal transitional style portion was added on in the early 1860s. Outside of the St. Louis Arsenal, this is the oldest surviving structure on Arsenal Street, predating even the Civil War era structures in Benton Park. The main reason for such an early construction date is that Gravois Road was one of the first streets to be laid out in St. Louis, as it was originally an Indian trail. The building survived a major fire in 2014, and was recently restored, saving a building that was in danger of being lost. Today the building is occupied and remains as one of the oldest buildings in the area.
