St. Louis History and Architecture is dedicated to showcasing the rich history and diverse architectural styles that can be seen in the city of St. Louis. Founded in 1764 by Pierre Laclede and Auguste Chouteau, the small French settlement of St. Louis grew from a small town to one of the largest and most influential cities in America in its first century of existence, and was world renowned for its architecture, culture, and manufacturing might in its second century of existence. Many early American pioneers, Civil War generals, as well as influential leaders in business and politics have resided in St. Louis, and in many cases, their legacies have been preserved through the numerous historic sites across several different neighborhoods. Today, many of these historic and architecturally significant places can still be admired when visiting the area.
